Anybody ever read this? I'm about halfway through and I have to say I am loving it. My gf loaned it to me because I wanted to read some sci-fi, and she seemed to feel the book was too dry and technical, but that's really where a lot of the appeal comes from. A ton of online reviews also claimed that the first half of the book was terrible, but I really loved it, so now I'm REALLY looking forward to the not-terrible half. A lot of the other negative reviews say that the author is constantly trying to impress with his vocabulary, but those people are missing the point, because he only ever does that when writing from the POV of one of the many main characters, and that's kind of his deal, since he's a bit of a douchebag professor. But since the book starts with him, I think a lot of people let that set the tone.

It really resonates with me. A lot of good ideas and great insights into the significance and predestination of humanity. Occasionally characters will say things or make observations that resonate so strongly with my own passive beliefs, or that ominously correlate with the current state of humanity in reality, that I have to just kind of stop for a second and let it soak in. It's definitely a book that will activate your almonds. The author seems to have moved on to writing fantasy, but of his earlier sci-fi endeavors, this book seems to be considered his worst, which makes me really excited to read the rest.

I just read The Death Gate Cycle by Hickman & Weiss, 7 book series. It's a little stiff and impersonal at times, and some books are entirely forgettable (2 and 5 come to mind) but the concepts are awesome. Characterizations are strong, some really good themes of morality, responsibility, consequence and redemption. The book is basically about one world that gets demolished and rebuilt as 4 by overzealous demi-gods, and each world has its own culture, rules and physics even. Great read if you're into that kind of technical stuff. Once again, I won't call it amazing, but definitely worth a read.

Read a sci-fi book called Roboteer. Earth and its accompanying neighbour systems adopt a theocracy to hold together and a colony of ultra-capitalists on a harsh world go for genetic engineering/cyborg stuff. Main character was modified and raised since birth to interface with robots and systems, which makes him a bit of a pariah since most Roboteers are functionally autistic.

I enjoyed the first book more than the other two. The motivations of some of the groups don't become clearer until way later, which can feel frustrating. I like the way some of the nemeses grow over time, and especially the way some characters get worn down until they snap, which I think was done satisfyingly and realistically.

That being said, I feel it goes off the rails a bit later, and their depiction of virtual space in later books just made me think of fantasy instead.

Overall a pretty good read.

I've read about 80% of your list. A few minor disagreements but my main one is ranking A Fire Upon the Deep so low. (You should still read Deepness in the Sky, it's better). What did you like about it?

More people should read Lord of Light.

Don't bother reading any more Hyperion books.

Reading the Dune sequels (WRITTEN BY FRANK, NOT BRIAN, HERBERT) until you get sick of them is a perfectly good option.

Read The Fountains of Paradise.

Armor by John Steakley might be worth reading but I'd avoid mil-SF in general even though you like ST and Forever War. It's a weak subgenre imo.

Gotta question. I’m planning out a fantasy story where the basic idea is all humans are able to partially shapeshift into animals. Will this come off as too “furry”, and get blacklisted? (The creatures they merge with aren’ts like cats and dogs and wolves and shit, it’s a lot more varied).

I recently started reading about philosophy because some of those guys thought in some pretty interesting ways. Particularly buddhist philosophy astounds me with how clear and razor sharp it is regarding suffering and attachements but more importantly the way to deal with them and this was like 4000 years ago. I see reading philosophy as reading about interesting ideas

Robert Silverberg's Lord Valentine's Castle is the first of a long series of books written in the 1980s, set in a low-tech fantasy world with several cohabiting species, about an exiled prince with amnesia who becomes a traveling juggler. Over the course of the books he gradually regains his memory, an army, and his throne, There is camaraderie, travelogues, lore and history, love interests and a revenge plot. It has an unabashedly light tone and derivative plot, but the prose is pleasantly lucid and visually interesting. I see it as a counterpoint to its direct contemporary, Book Of The New Sun.

yeah all books are in the runnerverse as fans started calling it. this one is too.
yes he does only trilogies but that doesnt mean there wont be new trilogies with the same characters.
i asked him a few questions per email and he was quite happy to tell me that sometime in the future ioana and felicia from supor sales are gonna visit yosemite and felix somehow is gonna get to runners world aka the original server.

i didnt really read daniel black only the first but someone a few generals ago mentioned that e william brown doesnt have a set schedule and is really unreliable with books.
atleast william/randi is consistent and always releases a new book every 3 months. which i like a lot. its great work ethic.

Well, he did find that portal room where his mother worked and experimented on his dad. I'm sure it's some router/hub that the server uses, and they (yosemite's people) gained admin access to it.

in super sales 2 kit gets portal power from felix. however runner intervenes as "god" and tells felix he cant use it travel to other world except for legionworld. i asked william about it but he didnt comment on the matter. so its either gonna be through kit or some other way. im actually kinda excited where this meta plot goes. i have a theory that its all gonna end up with everyone helping srit fight that ai the omaga built to take down runners shipt but i obviously have no basis for that but its something i would like to see.

probably. the running fan theory is that felix is actually a god without knowing it. and his slaves or employes dont actually add to his power but the faith in him they have empowers him in some way. its not really explained why it resets at midnight. but that could be very well it.

I had problems with how the main character acted foolishly at times, but I really enjoyed the world building. It spent a good amount of time focusing on the banal minutiae of the day to day life. I never thought about the idea of getting money from the Emperor to help get you to your destination, acquire the supplies necessary, etc.

The more I think about it, the more neat ideas I glean from my recollections. The boiled leather that was hardened, the vinegaroons on the acid seas, the different levels of civilization that impacted how monsters reacted.

To me they're comfort reading of the highest level. I read them in my youth, and I can embrace them despite their failures. Yes, its about finding a blue stone, yes its essentially fantastic versions of various cultures given precisely one role in the world to the extent that you could call it a racist caricature almost, but at the end of the day its just fun high fantasy. There are no surprises, but I do think the Will and the Way is a great system of magic.

Like most light novel translations they're mainly hobby translators. I gather the stories are mainly published on Wattpad style sites and the primary demographic is "people reading stuff on the bus/train on the way to work/school."

Allegedly western publishers have repeatedly rejected Wuxia/Xianxia translations because they think the flowery, over the top style won't sell in the west.
