Go to yellowbridge, reading center, Dao De Jing, it has three translations lined up side-by-side plus the ability mouse over each character and see different possible translations. ctext.org has something similar.

I heard Robert Henricks' translations are the best. This one is of the oldest known manuscript. He's also done the one in the Mawangdui silk texts.

And yet Laozi spends about 5,000 words of Chinese trying his best to express the Tao, or something pointing in the direction of it. You can at least try to render those 5,000 words of Chinese in English.
