I dare you to find one moment in the entire Otherland Quartet as cringy as Ernest Cline listing off Halliday's reading list and favorite films.

Tad Williams writes fantasy/sci-fi kino and George R.R. Martin considers him to be one of his biggest influences.

i gave up on RPO when the characters did a live performance of rocky horror. i could take the cringe before, but not after that

On the other hand I just started reading Otherland and I love it. It doesn't bore me by sticking too long to a plot thread it just keeps interweaving different stories to a nice crescendo. The audiobook has been a blessing at work this week

I read Otherland back when I was 12 or 13 and generally liked it. Made it maybe 30 pages into the sequel before putting it down and not coming back to it though; I guess my tastes were just maturing.
