Goethe's Faust

This is fucking Bullshit. I want to read it, but from looking around it appears there are no really good English translations of it. It just seems like there is just this fucking void of what is supposedly one of the greatest literary works out there and I am wondering why.

i thought the Wordsworth Classic translation of part 1 was ok... bit simplistic and grating in places, so the poetry didn't always shine through, but the story and characters did. Part 2 pretty much completely lost me though.

I read it, picked up a copy from a semi-local library. Just get one from a library, a university one being preferable.

I'm basically going to write off Faust as a great work. If it can't be translated to other languages, then it's obviously not that great. Great literature should be able to transcend language barriers.

Poetry is really hard to let it transcend to other languages. Mostly because syntax,rimes and shit, and Faust is just a 14k long poem.

Have you ever tried to read translated poems from Sappho and later Roman poems in different languages?Or even Persian poetry and Haiku?
You are really better off reading the original since you can better enjoy it.
