I haven't read a novel in 3 or so years, I exclusively read philosophy, history and skim through a bunch secondary literature without finishing it. It's a shitty habit to develop when you want to focus on a narrative but I can't seem to help it - novels have lost all magic for me. I'm hoping to force myself through some canonical works at least.

Danganronpa is a good meme, but a terrible piece of fiction. It succeeds as a 'fun ride' solely based on aesthetics and rule of cool.
In comparison, Phoenix Wright did a far better job of establishing a setting, weaving a narrative and developing its most important characters over the course of just a couple hours, and of course there's also Higurashi, which had surprisingly complex characters hidden behind its silly slice of life anime cliches juxtaposed against horror, mystery and crime, which just worked insanely well.

I read more for muh atmosphere than narrative and couldn't tell you the first thing about the plot of many books that I've read more than once. Sometimes I just get the feel of a book and put it down without finishing it, still satisfied with my experience.

I fucking love video games, and I hate it
Even talking or hearing about them makes my heart feel lighter because I can SEE the potential in it. It’s the most immersive medium and puts you in the whole experience, which no other medium can. However, only indie developers understand that it’s an art and not a product, but companies just ruin it.
It’s also generally a big waste of time in the grand scheme of things as you learn nothing from the experience, but fuck I just love it. It’s like reading sci-fi/fantasy genre feel good garbage but when there comes a good game a fall madly in love with it. I don’t care about a relationship or making 6 figures, I want to make an epic of a game. Something to rival that of the Iliad and odyssey yet also have the beautiful prose of moby dick and Ulysses.
But this dream is of the pipe variant, as I have to become successful for not me but my family. My family is full of headstrong go getters who instead of smelling the roses would pick them and sell them for some sort of money scheme. They are the most successful out of everyone in their family and both of my sisters are doctors. If I don’t end up as an equally profession like investment banking or something I’ll be a shame, a blight, a black sheep. I’ll be the failure, which I already feel the brand hovering over me

Original work. Last books I read last week are An Unlocked Mind and Before You Break by KC Wells, those are the first 2 books of their new series. Before that it was the Jonnies series of Amy Lane. Interspersed with some more novels, like Kill Game by Cordelia Kingsbridge. I've been slowing down lately but thinking about I still easily read more than a dozen novels since january. I'm midway half a dozen others too.

I don't know how this started. I just started reading a gay novel one day and I liked it so I read another one and now we're 3 years later and I've read hundreds of them. They're comfy and often very simple but still quite risqué. I'm well aware 99% of them aren't high literature but that doesn't stop me from devouring everything gay novel, genres be damned.

I have a genuine and seething hatred for most of the people on this board. Even the people that I end up having a civil conversation with make my skin crawl purely because of the smugness that radiates off almost any comment made on /lit/. It once flashed across to mind to maybe try and attend a meetup but I got so upset by the thought of speaking to a handful of you in person that I seriously had to lie down for a while just to ease my nerves.

If someone I meet in real life ever professes an interest in literature then I immediately stop taking them seriously and can be certain that I will never enjoy their company. Some of the poets in the critique threads are pretty pleasant, though.

Got to start somewhere, mate. As long as you enjoy what you read and you read at a comfortable pace then you're doing fine. Gradually the further you get into a book/the more interesting the book gets for you then you're more likely going to read and focus more than you would normally.

Try reading to an easy but set target in your free time. Maybe between 5 to 20 pages? At least you make progress. If you're easily distracted then try turning your internet off for an hour or so. I do this from time to time when I work and it helps me focus more.

Also try not to strain yourself, take breaks, keep hydrated, dude. Just enjoy yourself.

Higurashi is a weird one, because it pretends to be generic animeshit, introducing its characters as your usual 2d moeblobs with a couple of endearing personality quirks, and then using that facade as a cover to create the contrast between club activities and the tranquil village everyday on one hand and the mysterious and downright brutal hidden world which shines through it on the other. The characters are also presented in this dualistic way, with demon eyes as a visual cue. It is unclear whether in such scenes we are still dealing with the same character, whether this is their true personality, whether they are being possessed by the god the villages worship, or whether our vp character is merely going crazy.

And then, it actually manages to develop its main cast into well-written characters that transcend their anime aesthetic in terms of believably and depth, and rather than devolving into stupidity by choosing one of the many easy but meaningless solutions to the mysteries it has presented it uses its concluding chapters to bring home its core themes, divinity the demonic, sin and forgiveness, miracles and necessity.

Since I started studying classics in university, I basically have to read dense journal articles about epigraphy and philology for at least 2 hours a day. I don't remember the last time I had pleasure reading. Even when I get to read actual literature, having to do it to get evidence and sources for a research takes the fun away. But at least I have discovered the beauty of the Ancients in their own language, and God, they are beautiful.

Also I'm rapidly forgetting everything I learned about sociological theory in college even though I always found it really interesting. Just focus on thinking about what you're reading, instead of trying to 'retain' it - you won't be able to improve your ability to remember, but you can improve the way you process the information you encounter. Build your own thoughts alongside the text, and use that process as a crutch for remembering what it was about, and solve problems you encounter later on.

Rupi Kaur has some OK poems and I own both of her books despite being a straight white male.

I also don't mind SJW-tier books in general. I don't always agree with them but I'm open to different perspectives: I also read Schopenhauer, Zizek, Foucault, Peterson, Diogenes, etc. I'm just interested in hearing people out, even if I don't agree with it. I can disagree with something but still find the reading experience enjoyable.

I value writing by women, poc, and lgbt people more than straight white cis men and I genuinely think they're better writers.
A lot of PKD is kinda bad but he's still one of my favorites.
I have filters for certain words to remove low quality posts and it makes /lit/ much better.
A lot of classics are overrated.
