Heard it was amazing, read it, found that it wasn't that great. Am I not "getting it"?

Heard it was amazing, put it on my wishlist, forgot about it.

That's how all sci-fi threads should be.

Especially threads for Hyperion.

I loved it, definatly worth the read imo. I did read Ilium and Olympos before it though so I knew what I was getting into if that makes any sense.
I'd recommend these two first if your reading Dan Simmons for the first time.

Yes.

Is there a reason why you enjoyed it so much? I thought the part about the priest was awesome, but that's where the awesome ends.

>> No.1080207

I found Hyperion enjoyable. Won't consider it a classic, but it was a good book.

Did anyone read the sequel? It sounded like it was set quite a bit in the future; so I put it off, since I don't like reading the timeskip sequels right after finished the first.

>> No.1080208

it was OK, but really it was just Star Trek: the original series with some hardcore porn. Nothing deep or really worth reading...

I'm a bit weird in that I love books that have a complicated backstory, and this series has that in spades. This first book is in a Canterbury tales style and he has alot of different literary themes througout his books. Everything will be explained in the second book and it's not what you'd expect.

>> No.1080284

I'd give the Hyperion Cantos a good solid B-. I didn't love it, but I enjoyed it. It's not GREAT, but it's better than a lot of other sci-fi. I'll be reading the Endymion books this month.

I will say it has me very interested to read more Keats.

What I like about Simmons is that I think in another life he could have been an academic instead of a popular novelist. He's obviously very interested in a wide variety of subjects. And some sections of his novels read like lost chapters from some doctoral thesis, that he's woven into his stories. And he's gotten better with age.

He was an academic. He used to be a teacher for the gifted, intelligent.

Yeah, no, I don't mean high school teachers. Even for gifted students.

I mean English professors. People who publish. Literary criticism. That kind of thing.

Typically they are better teachers, yes. Not necessarily better 'academics', whatever that means.

Judging from the book cover, I assume that you have to be a virgin to like it.

Congratulations on getting some, bromethius.
