I'm looking for obsolete literary genres. Ones that aren't written anymore without the author consciously resurrecting them.

Here's a partial list: fabilau, philosophical dialogue, saga, Western, epistolary novel, sermon, apocalypse, hagiography, dream story, epics, chivalric romances. What others can /tg/ think of?

I don't know about genre, but you don't see the cut-up technique that William S. Burroughs pioneered.

I don't know, you'd really have to ask /tg/.

Funny story, I just read Castle of Otranto. It's considered the first 18th century Gothic novel I guess. It was just full of italian princesses swooning, romance, and over-the-top emotions. At first I thought it was a tongue-in-cheek comedy, like Shakespeare's plays or something. Especially during the scene in the beginning where the lord of the castle starts to lust after his son's bride and she literally has to run from him.

So I was expecting it to get to the real shit before the end, like solving the mystery of the ghosts and the giant living suit of armor, but then the book suddenly ended. I take it was written quite seriously then.
