The issue with "mass immigration" is never what national conservatives claim it to be. A. The culture weren't that different.
B. The "racial" aspect of the thing was much less prominent. Both Italians and Americans are white and even if there are differences they're minimal.
C. The immigration stopped after a while, allowing for those groups to be assimilated.

The thing about current immigration is that there is no racial affinity so the immigrants are always going to be distinct from the native population on the basis of race (I've read a couple of studies that suggest that these kind of societies tend to structure themselves towards racial/ethnic lines, basically it causes people of each ethnicity to vote for the party that is perceived as their ally regardless of if said party aligns with their political beliefs) hence assimilation not happening.
