Heart of Darkness. I had trouble understanding what was going on in certain parts and it was a struggle to get through even though it's pretty short. I had to reread shit over and over again and then check sparknotes at the end of every chapter to make sure I wasn't missing anything simple. I ended up understanding the basic plot and some of the simpler themes like colonialism and societal isolation but I failed to see the big picture and I failed to experience it on an artistic level. Hopefully when I reread it I won't be such a brainlet.
