Hello /lit/. Allow me to explain why the Harry Potter collection is a great work of fiction. It's very simple. Harry Potter is great because it is a prerequisite for reading HPMOR, which is absolutely brilliant fiction. Among other things, it has the most relatable protagonist that the last three generations have ever seen and it will challenge how you see the world.

Yeah, I thought that it seemed a little weird.

HPMOR is excellent, I just don't want this discussion to get bogged down by talking about the author; /lit/ is incapable of talking about MOR without mentioning how problematic Yudkowsky is in any number of fields.

Also it's not like HPMOR is particularly groundbreaking. What it is is a great entry level text for the sorts of psychological and philosophical things it discusses. And we do need entry level texts.

Anyway who's everybody's favourite character? How do you feel they compare to their canon counterparts? How could they have been rendered better?

And Quirrel did nothing wrong.

Draco is superior to cannon, but I've heard that's the norm for HP fanfic.

Lol no, HPMOR is overrated garbage. Read a better fanfic like A Long Journey Home, On the way to greatness, or Wand and Shield.

When I'm reading HPMOR, I'm not really thinking of it as fanfic. Probably because it's not written by a teenager and is actual novel quality, to say nothing of the themes it seeks to demonstrate. But what makes you say it's overrated? I think its fans are pretty aware of its flaws.

It's a tiresome author tract written as a huge mugglewank. Everything and everyone in wizarding society is retarded except for Harry and Hermione, he goes on for several paragraphs at a time explaining "muh rationalism" principles while others gape in shock and astonishment, and the author's philosophy is fucking retarded anyway.
I thought it was legitimatelt funny at the beginning, and worked as a good parody of "Harry curbstomps everyone" genre of fanfiction, but the author decided to take it for real somewhere along the line. I can't stand to read huge swathes of it even if there are ocassional smart quips here and there.
