It's a good book and I don't recall it being depressing.

It dwells around various them, but the one I recall most is that a big part of the book is about the wild sexuality that one of the character got because he was bullied as a kid.

Personally, I prefered La carte et le territoire from Houellebecq but a basis in contemporary art makes it more enjoyable.
