My personal favourite sci-fi book/ series. You WILL be massively disappointed if you don't have the sequel handy though.

If you do read it, check out Endymion and The Rise Of Endymion afterwards; more of the same with different characters.

In my opinion Simmons' historical fiction is much better than his sci-fi. The Terror and Drood are my two favorite books by him. They are slow, but in that Baroque Cycle way that I personally enjoy.

Those are pretty terrible books. It was just him showing off his Proust and Shakesphere knowledge without the the benefit of an interesting character like Martin in Hyperion.

That and the fact that his Trojan War was shit. He obviously didn't know anything about ancient Greek. How the fuck could his Homer Scholar not know that Achilles and Patroclus were lovers? Idiot.
