How damaging to the books is it to keep them stored horizontally like the OP?

I have one full bookshelf, with no where else for my new books to go. So I was planning on adjusting to a horizontal format so they could all be together. At least until I can afford to buy more shelves, but I don't know when that will be.

Is the damage marginal? Exaggerated? What do?

In all honesty, I don't know much about English translations of Russian because I can usually get cheaper Spanish translations in stores and not wait 10 days for them to arrive.
I own another of her translations (Bulgakov's The White Guard) which did nothing for me. I'm not sure if the original is at fault, but it was a big disappointment. I had read The Master and Margarita, Morphine and A Country Doctor's Notebook but The White Guard was just... dry and impersonal.
