he, at least seems to, have a respectable reputation but every sentence was just so freaking dull. no interesting observations and a slow prose style ...

The humor wasn't doing anything for me.

that can be a tricky book to follow plot-wise at times. I didn't get much humor on first reading. Once you understand what is happening the humor really shines. Same thing with A Confederacy of Dunces

It's such a long book though. Is it really worth reading twice just to 'get' it?

no, I strongly support your decision to stop reading it if it doesn't hold your interest, I just had a similar problem but was determined to finish. The reason I reread it was because I usually get more out the second time around, and this is usually stronger with humorous books for me.

The greatest gift I ever gave myself was to stop reading this meandering pile.

No, what frustrated me is that I couldn't know if the blade slicing is a metaphor or it really did cut something

yeah I liked it, i thought it was gonna be just a long tirade of bitching about things but there was a real sentimentality underneath it all along with the clinical treatment of sex and mortality made it enjoyable

The Book of Whispers, some romanian novel about a genocide, it seemed promising but the prose turned out awful

I hated that book. For me it was Ulysses. I wasn't ready yet for the final meme boss.
