Denis Johnson is a household name, son. In any respectable household, that is.

I don't have one favourite but this is ONE of my favourites. It's one of the strangest books I've ever read. Ostensibly sci-fi, it's an exploration of different philosophies and theologies by way of visiting an alien planet. There's almost no plot and even less characterisation and it's often quite disturbing. As the protagonist passes to a different region he physically mutates in various ways.

The creativity is amazing. There's a scene where the protagonist comes across a person sitting next to a lake, with one foot inside the lake. This person is a musician who creates music by using his willpower to "play" the lake, this has a violent effect on the physical world around him and his thoughts are projected into "shapes" that others can see.

Forgot to mention that Harold Bloom, the very same western canon meme man himself, held A Voyage To Arcturus in such high regard that he actually wrote a sequel:

This is Bloom's only work of published fiction and it's generally regarded as shit by critics and Bloom himself.
