How long should a novel be? What's the lowest acceptable word count for a full-length piece?

The ideal length of any fiction is the amount one can read in a single sitting.

There is no defined number of words required for a novel. Just write as many words as needed for a good story. If the story ends up short, it's a short story. If it's longer, it's a novel.

A novel is never too long. It's takes precisely as long as it needs to.

I researched this recently. Apparently the consensus on where a novella becomes a novel is 40 000 words, with a minority of people suggesting 50 000 words instead.
