So, I've just finished reading the Aeneid, after reading The Iliad and The Odyssey, one after the other.
I'm just in awe. These works manage to surpass what it means to be human. I don't know, I'm just so surprised to see how these poets managed to craft such beautifull works of art. Anyone else had this feeling after reading them? Did another book left you like this?

eh, they were okay. i'm thankful for their existence, in the sense that they have inspired countless brilliant authors and poets, but in the end i have begun to realize that they're not my bag. i think perhaps to take inspiration from them is difficult for me, as I sense such a language limitation, however, i am content to be derivative of a derivative of a derivative, if i am ever to create. I once had the patience for these epics, but they are not for me now.

yeh, my reaction was the same. same for paradise lost. i asked why did anyone write anything else after them. dante i couldn't even start, his pseudy references interrupt and distract from the telling.

That's going to be my next read, probably. Either that or The Lusiads (Os Lusíadas, I'm brazillian and I'm interested in it as well). I have copies of them with me already. Anything I should know about PL before reading it? My edition has a tremendous amount of references, and I grew up a catholic, so I know my way around the bible. Will I be fine with the references he makes in the text?

yes, you should be fine reading paradise lost if you're familiar with the bible. some say it's too long, and i agree the last part drags a bit as milton ties all his ends together, but it's better than 99.999% of contemporary shit.
