Why doesn't /lit/ like this guy? Is it because his books are popular and used for escapism? Is it because /lit/ is full of very serious people who don't like fun?

Because even if his made up languages and autistic dedication to world building is impressive, genre fiction is still genre fiction.

literally no one dislikes him. sometimes the genre memer faggots may technically be trash talking him but thats not direct

But Tolkien isn't fun. He turned fantasy into a genre where autistic attention to the world and fake names supersedes precision and quickness of narrative.

Started to read Silmarillion recently. I read about 25% of it in a few days (until Chapter 13) and... I cannot read any further. For some reason (maybe because of the LotR and Hobbit movies) I thought that Tolkien's main influence were mythologies of Indo-European peoples, first of all Germanic and Celtic ones. But Silmarillion is filled with Biblical motives. ALL it's morality and oldest mythology are the ones derived from the Bible.

But that's not the main problem. It looks like I was fed by George Martin/Andrzej Sapkowski-tier fantasy for too long and now I simply don't like the fully unscientific way he describes creation of his world. I don't like the concept of Eru Iluvatar, don't like his description of Sun and Moon and stars and don't like the fact that Arda turned out to be FLAT as it is mentioned in Silmarillion's chapter about Sun and Moon's creation.

So, I definetely should have read this book 8 years ago when I was still 14. Now I cannot appreciate it.
