hey there /lit/ I'm currently looking for a new fantasy series to read, some of my favorite works are Robert Jordan, Scott Lynch, and the Legend of The Seeker novels. I'm not looking for anything too intellectual, or pretentious, just a good read into a well written fantasy.
In return for your valiant efforts, enjoy this story

Try the Twilight Reign series by Tom Lloyd? They're pretty good, lots of stuff going on, and the fourth book (of five) just came out.

no probs they are both awesome series

If you like Jordan and Goodkind you might also like David Eddings. He isn't blow your socks off good but he tells a good yarn and is fairly entertaining. He's brain candy. Well he's wormfood because he died last year but you know what I mean.

>> No.1068657

I'm also a fan of tolkien and Lukyanenko, so slightly sci-fi is not a problem for me, I could also deal with suggestions along the lines of Ender's Game books.

>> No.1068661

I had no idea Eddings was dead, this is a definite disappointment as I have already read Polgara :L

Oh I think his best books were all the series ones. I hated the one off books

sorry you found out this way.

The last book I read was Orcs by Stan Nicholls, and no I haven't read the earthsea novels, I'm going to put that on the list.

Did you enjoy Orcs? I thought bits of it were good but overall it was at best a bit meh to be honest. Just felt it wasn't fantastically written and playing on lots of overused tricks.

My god you couldn't have said better, my opinion of it was just a little bit too forced on both plot and placement of violence.

Knight and Wizard were shit tier books IMHO

boring, the detail is misplaced and at times unnecessary, and a lot of it was wanking about how great the main character was because of the various godlike figures that poured power onto him.

additionally, there's no wizardry at all, so I felt entirely misled.

I wanted to second the Abercrombie thing. It's awesome stuff. Consider Brent Weeks' "Night Angel Trilogy" too (don't let the hideous covers and stupid name scare you away). "Assassin's Apprentice" by Robin Hobb is the start of an awesome trilogy as well.

...ooh! or "The Deed of Paksenarrion"

nb4 Gene Wolfe shitstorm. Also, you are a child.

I just read the Mistborn trilogy on recommendation from a friend. It was pretty fun, lots of original action and plot twists. Fun to read, nothing too heavy...

Anyway, this got me on a fantasy kick. I combed the web and found this list: http://www.bestfantasybooks.com/top25-fantasy-books.php . It is by far the most informative and well thought out list I could find.

Have Rothfuss and Erikson books on the way now...

If you enjoy urban fantasy, you'll like the Dresden Files.

There was this one where a unassuming hero and his merry band go on a perilous journey to defeat a great evil with the aid of a wizard who pops up occaisionally. Can't remember what it was called, but the good guys won in the end. You should read it.
