Having free will sucks. Why did philosophers ever think this was a good thing? If we ever get the technology to manipulate someone's mind to make them perpetually content and happy, I'll be the first one to jump into it.

You could buy enough heroin to be in utter bliss until you die by overdose right now. So why don't you?
Personally I think the way opioid users look like animals just lying there doing nothing with their lives and rotting away is enough to make me choose the unhappy alternative since that way you can actually become something and make something of your life rather than throwing it away because it feels good.

We already have these, they're called antidepressants. And a large portion of people (after the initial weeks of happiness) become existentially depressed, and worse (I was of them).
"Qualia" changes. For the worse—almost a zombiefication; you are still there seemingly locked up, the emotions aren't your own.

Obviously, it's still good for people with the physical inability to be "happy"/emotional scale all fucked up.

Both of those require becoming a wage slave and getting sucked into an expensive pharmaceutical addiction. Kind of defeats the point.

So not only do you want eternal happiness, you want eternal happiness at no cost and no negative effects? This must be the age of the Last Man after all.
