Is this Roth telling me to stop writing fiction or are you telling Roth to stop writing fiction, because I think he already has, although I saw a headline the other day where he was quoted as saying that he had plenty of writing left in him, as in to signal that he could continue writing if he wanted to so it'd make sense if you were the one telling Roth to stop.

>“After that, I decided that I was finished with fiction,” Roth went on. “I don’t want to read it, I don’t want to write it, and I don’t even want to talk about it anymore. I dedicated my life to the novel. I studied them, I taught them, I wrote them, and I read them. At the exclusion of nearly everything else. It’s enough!”

>When asked if there could possibly be another book, Roth said, “I don’t think a new book will change what I’ve already done, and if I write a new book it will probably be a failure. Who needs to read one more mediocre book?”

I'm surprised he had this self awareness. If only he had developed it sooner.

Since Salter's death, Roth is the only great living prose stylist.

April 26, 2011:
>[Bloom] praises his friend Philip Roth, who “wrote two astonishing books, ‘American Pastoral’ and ‘Sabbath’s Theater,’ and some of the others, like the Zuckerman saga, are good, too, but his recent work, his four short novels, make me very sad, are a tremendous falling-away on his part.

November 9, 2012:
>But now he has stopped. Roth, who is seventy-nine, recently told the French magazine Les inRocks, “To tell you the truth, I’m done.” “Nemesis,” which was published in 2010, will be his last book.
