I want to start writing because I feel like I can overcome some of my insecurities by putting them into words and on paper. I'm an engineering student so I have no idea on where to start. I've always read alot, mostly philosophical essays and literature. No fantasy or anything like that. What would you recommend I start with? Should I just write long and extensive ideas I've developed or try to create stories?

you should give up. why does anybody want to
read what you write? focus on engineering and
money

Just write whatever you want to write. Sit down and just start, it doesn't matter how shit it is, if you really want to write just sit down and do it.

You can do what you want but the most important advice I can give you is put pen to paper or hand to keyboard immediately. Some people like to imagine the idea of being a great author but never actually doing it in fear of failure
