Is it true that the great, foundational books of western literature can't be understood without a teacher? If so, am I wasting my time reading the Bible and homer on my own

It's easier if you have talented teachers to help you along, but they are hard to come by and no teacher at all is better than a shit one. There's lots of online resources and supplementary literature you can check out to help in understanding these texts. Start with easy, introductory texts. By introductory I mean books introducing and giving an overview of these foundational texts, not easier foundational texts.

Most teachers are shit honestly. Everything you need to know about a subject in the humanities has been written down and is available for self study.

You can do it yourself. Besides art, literature is subjective. You get what you take from it. If you dont understand a word or paragraph look up a guide or even sparknotes/wikipedia summaries.
