I read Flowers for Algernon about ten years ago. Whilst I didn't cry (because I'm not a fucking bitch) I can easily say it is the single saddest thing I have every read, and even a decade later I still think back on it and have a fairly strong emotional response. Personally, for that alone, I consider it a masterpiece.
