Opinions welcomed.

Had to put this up quick because images weren't working. I wanted to see /lit/ 's opinion on all beat/hippie writers. Are they just juvenile like a lot of critiques claim or do they actually have substance within in their works.

I like to blame myself for the beatnik horror

Love 'em.
It's easy to for someone (particularly young contrarians today) to say the beats were juvenile. But that's missing the point. They knew that, that's what they're writing was about.
Kerouac said- Hey! Maybe I could take reefer-smoking, negro music, and hanging out with friends and make that literature.
Burroughs said- Hey! Maybe I could take the nightmares of heroin withdrawal and turn it into satire.
And so on.
It took balls, it was new, and it was a movement undertaken by a bunch of kids. It's pretty cool.

Ginsberg was a member of NAMBLA

Well said. I'd also like to add that they did a great deal for me in terms of questioning authority. They're not the end all of literature, but they can be a good starting point.

That being said, their value isn't only as a starting point. I return to the beats frequently.

Burroughs is a fucking Saint.

Kerouac is boring.

Ginsburg is less boring.

The Daily Mail still prints trash articles like this.

I've read nearly all the works of these fantastic individuals. I even have a shelf in my bookcase dedicated to the Beats.

I love how reckless youth still rings true today. The world might change around us, but we keep on being ourselves.
