Saramago doesn't get much discussion here so time for a Saramago thread.

What's your favorite Saramago book /lit/?

What do you think of his writing style?

Read any good Saramago lately?

I personally always loved the double and the indepth look at how fragile individuality is.

I could never stand his style. I've really tried to like it, but it just disgusts me, though I can see why he is a great author. He is fully aware of what he is doing, that much is obvious, and yet I've always felt that he's sloppy and pretentious because of his writing style.

For me, he's just one of those authors you know are great and why, but simply can't like them.

How would you describe his style? I was about to get Blindness but maybe will just watch the movie with Mark Ruffalo...

What did you read of his you didn't like desu?

Death at Intervals, Cain, and a couple of his short stories. I only finished Cain, the others were too awful for me. Read them in Spanish, if that matters.

I ain't doing that because I'd rather you read him and develop your own opinions on him. I didn't like his style, but maybe you will love it. His style is so unique that you will know if you like it or not within the first few paragraphs. Give him a try. That's always better than listening to some faggot on /lit/.

I’ve read Blindness and am pretty conflicted about it. Regarding his style I do like how dense it is, how it manages to draw you in and keep your attention for a long time, the narrator who is both omniscent and a part of the story. But I found myself reading it too fast, partly because of his dialogue which never uses any periods, and partly because it’s quite plot-driven.
Story-wise he made me feel a lot for the characters, holy moly this book gets dark, and it had a very interesting concept. Finishing it I wonder what the point of it all was, though. There is a message but it felt sort of flat compared to how dark the book got in the middle. Maybe I’ll give The Double a shot.

That's the same speech I've heard about Borges's writing. Is Saramago's prose and content like Borges's?

Not at all. In fact, they are almost complete opposites. I very much enjoy Borges's style.

The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis is my favorite book of his. It's so unique. Saramago tries to complete the life story of one of Fernando Pessoas heteronyms.

This. I've only read Blindness too, and it's a weird experience. It's certainly a page-turner, that much is for sure, but I ended it wondering what the hell it meant. I got very confused as to what was the actual subject matter at times and there were some passages that simply seem to serve little purpose. At the same time, there were very profound, extremely insightful and a nice balance of good irony and eerie dark bits.
Basically, I just didn't know what the hell happened when I finished it.
But maybe I'm just dumb. Or blind.

Certainly very worth reading though.

I've read all of his major works and some of his minor works I think he's a GOAT

I remember when I was in high school my Portuguese teacher was working on her doctorate thesis about Saramago. I used to really like his books at the time. Ensaio sobre a Cegueira had a very unique style, it was confusing to me, but Iinteresting nonetheless.

lucidity is even weirder and yet its social commentary and his dry humor are a bit more ovbious yet it has a darker ending.

highly recommend it

Unironically The Duplicate Man

Haven't read him in two years

His writing style is great, but his best quality is how he can think of every interesting scenario you could think of and make a great book out of it

Also, it seems that none of you plebs has ever read Baltasar and Blimunda...

His Gospel according to Jesus Christ is one of my favorite novels, beautiful book.
