I wanted to get into Don Quixote, but it seems like my literary knowledge is lacking in order to tackle this book.

Since I think this is a parody about knight books it would probably make sense to have read Le Morte d'Arthur and similar works to gauge what is being made fun of by Cervantes.

So my question is this: Do I need any prerequisite reading before reading Don Quixote?

You know how a knight book is, you don't need to read them.

I've already started with them and even started reading some Roman works as well. Still this doesn't seem like its enough.

The foreword of the author begs to differ. There he mentions works by Julius Caesar, Plutarch and Latin quotes.
