he's not wrong, it used to be women having power over men only in the bedroom and having a shared power relationship outside of that, but now it's all meta and frankly not even that sexual anymore. its terribly hard to find a good femdom video these days because its all cuckoldry, JOI or some weird shit where there is no actual sexual content whatsoever

socrates and alcibiades origin story in xenophon kind of scuppers them being navy even though navy were rarely slaves. poor, but not slaves. supplying your own armour/arrows, etc. was a barrier to other service, but the navy was mostly citizens. which is why the citizens families voted to off generals for not saving rowers from a storm in the build up to socrates death and demosthenes defeating aeschines too late to save attica from macedon.

You're right, I vaguely remember my Greek history teacher telling me slaves were at least used more at the start to row, because they couldn't find anyone else to do it, but even that's possibly wrong. Strange how Socrates did end up serving in the army, though, despite being notoriously poor, maybe his friends bought his shit for him

An incompetent philosophy lecturer was teaching a class on moral properties.

"Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship the is/ought problem. You must accept that it's fundamentally impossible to get an 'ought' from an 'is' using empiricism.

At this moment a brave atheist, with a PhD in neuroscience and who had over 45 million youtube debate views stood up.

"Raping a child is wrong/bad/negative."

The arrogant professor smirked quite Scottishly and smugly replied,

"On what basis, you stupid STEM-tard? Raping a child is a descriptive statement. You are prescribing a normative value and implying it 'ought' to be a negative thing."

"Wrong. The entire debate resides inside a semantic framework with the concept of normative having no relevance. All we have are 'IS' statements based on empirical observation, and various forms of the verb 'TO BE'. There 'IS' a Child; the Child 'WAS' raped; a governing body 'HAS' decided that it's a punishable offense; you 'ARE' crying about 'oughts'; and you 'ARE' ignored while punishable offenses 'ARE' influenced by empirical observation, economic trends, social pressures and other forms of 'IS'. Your so-called normative 'ought' has been demolished because we can and do form policies and decisions inside inter-subjective semantic models, and individuals voice their own subjective 'IS' statements to collectively influence the framework."

The professor was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and copy of A Treatise of Human Nature. He stormed out of the room crying about what he ought to do. There is no doubt that at this point our professor, David Hume, wished he had embraced New-atheism.

The previously faux-Christian contrarian students erupted into applause and declared that moral values are officially in the hands of science. An eagle named "the scientific method" flew into the room and perched atop the copy of "The Moral Landscape" and shed a tear on the hardcover. The last sentence of "the God delusion" was read several times, and the Pope declared that morality does not come from God.

The professor lost his tenure and was executed by Hume's guillotine the next day.

The brave student's name? Ham Sarris.

I can't remember any contemporary references, but I know Socrates gets mocked a lot for his shoes always being on point. Dude was OG, most of his poverty was elective, and based in looking like a Spartan warrior faggot artisan.
A lot of the time Spartan/dirty/not having more than a cloak is the Attic way of saying "raging faggot, lock up your young sons", so most of poverty attributed to Socrates is part him saying "i'm a rebel go sparta" and part commentators saying "what an utter poofter".
Xanthippe probably had more bank, but he married her late and pissed her off with his shit. Masonry's pretty solid work til your protege gets accused of defacing statues and sucking your cock, so he probably wasn't very hard up

"An atheist, communist, ACLU lawyer professor was teaching a class on Karl Marx. "Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and accept that Marx was the most highly-evolved being the world has ever known, greater than Jesus Christ!" At this moment, a brave, patriotic, pro-life Navy SEAL stood up, holding a rock. "How old is this rock, professor?" The arrogant professor smirked and smugly replied "4.6 billion years, you stupid Christian." "Wrong. It’s been 5,000 years since God created it. If it was 4.6 billion years old and evolution, as you say, is real… then it should be an animal now." The professor was visibly shaken. He dropped his chalk and stormed out of the classroom. The students applauded and all registered Republican. An eagle flew into the room and perched atop the American Flag and shed a tear on the chalk. That flag waves until this day, despite the lack of wind in the classroom. Semper Fi."

>I know Socrates gets mocked a lot for his shoes always being on point
I swear there are only two dialogues of Plato's that mention this, and for specific reasons, one being the Symposium, and I think the other was Timaeus. For the Symposium I know it was to juxtapose his ugly features, and was sort of an inverse of the attributes Alcibiades attributes to him in that dialogue (ugly on the outside, beautiful on the inside), and, in fact, I think Socrates only jokingly tries to look beautiful to kind of mock them, then gives a speech in his own style, without the sorta rhetorical flourish of Agathon, Aristophanes etc. I'm super drunk, and haven't read this shit for a while, but when Socrates is made to look nice in terms of dress in Plato, it's always ironic

>I took a creative nonfiction course with him at Ponoma back in '94. We weren't allowed to show anyone our essays outside of the class for some reason. He seemed naturally intelligent, didnt need to look at any notes or textbooks or prepare for any lectures, he just knew his stuff and was super casual.
>I saw him talking to a girl on campus one day. He uncharacteristically wore a Fila sweatsuit, the kind that looks like it's made from the same material as parachutes, and trainer sneakers with a matching bandana. That was his pussy hunt outfit apparently. Several times a week, same outfit, I'd see him hitting on women in it. I once saw him wearing it while carrying an identical outfit from the dry cleaners, he had like 4 sets of same Fila sweatsuit.
>I asked him about it in class and he said we aren't allowed to discuss anything unrelated to class while inside class, the same way we can't show anyone outside of class our essays. A student called out "but Dostoevsky isn't in this class and last week you talked about replicating his black tea obsession to test its affects on your own writing". Wallace stared blankly at the student with dead eyes for 30 seconds in dead silence then said "you just got knocked down a full letter grade. Any other smart asses? Didn't think so." and pushed up his glasses with his index finger.

The university professor challenged his students with this question. Did God create everything that exists? A student bravely replied, "Yes, he did!"

"God created everything?" The professor asked.

"Yes sir",

"If God created everything, then God created evil since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are then God is evil". The student became quiet before such an answer. The professor was quite pleased with himself and boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, "Can I ask you a question professor?"

"Of course", replied the professor.

"Professor, does cold exist?"

"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?" The students snickered at the young man's question.

The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-460 degrees F) is the total absence of heat; all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat."

The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?"

The professor responded, "Of course it does."

The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?"

Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course as I have already said. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil."

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not like faith, or love that exist just as does light and heat. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light."

The professor sat down.
The young man's name? Albert Einstein!

There's a common reaction for people to hate something with too many replies because the amount of replies gives a huge expectation, then you read it and it's kinda funny but not as funny or clever as you thought it would be. This is ironically further exacerbated by people angrily responded "HAHAHA SO FUNNY UPBOAT :^)" where they probably wouldn't have been so mean/would have thought it was funny if they saw it when it didn't have a lot of responses.

Overall, though, people responding a lot to a post is usually cancer. The first few are genuinely people who think it's funny, then people overdo it.

this one was good. I feel for the anon, but I also could totally see bantering about his story if I got it through the slush pile. The concept seems like a kids book but OTOH Jonathan Livingston Seagull was pretty popular with adults (well, hippie adults) when it came out. I thought it was pretty cool but admittedly I was in like the 9th grade.

Where’s the one about the lad with hot legs that fell asleep in the bath tub at a party after denying sex to a girl to instead describe to her the plot of Ulysses. He posted a pic someone took of himself asleep in the tub
