I've been thinking about joining one just to socialize and brainstorm, but my past experiences at my uni tell me it's gonna be shitty poetry slams and hacks trying to get their YA novels published on amazon.

What are reading clubs even for? I mean, you don't need other people to read a book.
Do you just discuss about them? But then it means that the people in it red the same book and that's rarely the case.

You will probably get better from it, even if there is no one better than you, it will make you write more, and even just knowing you have an audience will make you work more meticulously and revise more carefully
