How do I analyse literary works as good as this poster? How do I read beyond the surface without having to look at secondary material.
Would reading Finding a form by Gass help?

Read lots of literary essays (Calvino, Eco) and read lots of secondary fiction, or, as >>10495128 writes, just parrot what the teacher in your class says

so how can i adeptly discern whats bullshit and what isn't
I've been shitposting and edging for the past 3 years (neet) and I read a passage from the art of fiction and then it goes onto describing endless intricacies of the literary techniques used to evoke feeling and all I can think when I'm reading is what is described literally.

Dude why do you care? There are such low stakes involved. If you wanna get better at lit crit, just read some and take a class. Stop with this "I wanna make cool internet posts" poseury.

I don't want to make cool internet posts
It just seems like if you can learn to read novels and then poetry you can pretty much appreciate all works of music, art, film to the fullest extent.
Also I enjoy the solitariness of reading. It amplifies all my senses my imagination and makes me appreciate the world more, the ever-changing tapestry of the sky for one is absolutely magnificent no matter how many times I look at it

no
accomplished lit critics embarrass themselves on music and other media
many people who have been reading their whole lives can't into film

Your problem is not reading the wrong books, or reading on the wrong level of narrative and interpretation. Your problem is simply not reading enough. Which is okay since you're young and have other business. But if you really want to get better at this, just read more. You'll pick up everything along the way.

hey, OP. glad you're interested in this; it's an entirely new way to enjoy literature once you get some practice doing it.

it's honestly not a bad idea to take an intro to lit course. you, at first, will only be able to parrot your teacher, but you'll definitely get practice at analysis by doing so. you'll start to get in the habit of looking underneath the text and recognizing extended metaphors and things.

i'm probably gonna take heat for this suggestion, but honestly, a worthwhile book to read as you're first becoming interested in this is freud's introductory lectures on psychoanalysis. freudian interpretations of literature are pretty universally panned on this board, BUT freudian analysis is a good, easy place to start thinking about what words mean beyond literal description.

from there, maybe pick up a book that's a well known political allegory, like animal farm or the master and the margarita, and read them after you've learned ahead of time what each character / setting is meant to represent. that way, you can see it in action and get used to how authors accomplish these things.

then, try reading something on your own and coming up with an interpretation, and check it against common interpretations online.

this is just an idea, also. may not work the best for you or for everyone, but it might help you start to appreciate lit the way you're interested in doing so.
