Also, Dubliners is an ensemble work, all the stories are fine when presented as the complete novel that they are and were intended to be.

It's pretty simple. It's a metaphor for Irish nationalism. Joyce was pointing out that Irish had an inferiority complex and wanted to be like Continental European countries instead of forming an identity of their own.

So the Irish guy goes out to party with the French guys and is just completely out of his depth in terms of class and sophistication. He loses all of his money and realizes he can't compete with the big dogs from the Continent. Basically saying that Ireland will always be a loser if it tries to idolize other cultures instead of forming a nationalism of its own.

Read the story again looking at it from this perspective and it will make a lot more sense.
