Out of Yoshikawa Eiji's works, Musashi's own texts, and the various pieces of literature based on this man's life, which do you most strongly resonate with. Was it to the taste of /lit/?
Also, warrior code thread.

I've only seen the samurai trilogy films which were beautiful to look at, but in the end pretty fucking trash

I found that all the expectations and hopes she had about Matahachi, only for him to constantly fail and embarrass himself, were pretty interesting. Not too many authors make use of such a pitiable character, and less still make you want him to best his nature and become someone worthwhile. We all wish to be like Musashi, but the reality is we're all Matahachi.

Do I read this or Taiko first?

I've got to know the story of Musashi from the manga Vagabond. Then I read the book, but never finished it, I went more than half way through though. Later I watched the films with Mifune.

I like all versions. The manga has significant changes in the story compared to the book, but I like those changes, just like I like the book (a rare encounter of quality, I think). I love how introspective it is, both manga and book go well inside the head of the characters at some points. I love the format of the book due to its publishing, you have several little snippets of text, I think it actually suits our times to think of stories like this. Everytime they move to a new place you get one portion of text that describes the people and the neighborhood, it's very nice.

Yes, I like this a lot as well. Matahachi and Musashi balance each other out in a way I've never since in other stories. Matahachi is such a coward, such a fraud, but he is totally neurotic about it and confused, you end up liking him a lot even when he does shit.

Also, did I get it right/remember correctly or did Musashi had like the quickest shift of character when he is arrested and reads a bunch of books before getting out a different person?

Whichever strikes your fancy, really. Even if you don't know much about the history of a the time, you learn a fair bit just from the book.

His character shifted quickly to the reader, but you have to remember he was locked up for 3 years, which is plenty of time to change a man and allow them to face up to their flaws.

Yeah, I know, but I thought it was totally unconventional, I think it even had a comedic effect as I read it, but I'm not complaining.

Fair enough, I agree that 3 years in a hole wouldn't have done anyone any favours. What happens in the manga to provoke his first enlightenment? Just Takuan hitting him over the head?

There are several cathartic moments in the manga. Certainly that's one of the first. But I think his transition from angry forest kid to a sophisticated swordsman is slowe in the manga.
