>The problem inherent in the surface of things, and only in the surface of things, is the heart of things.

What did he mean by this?

But seriously, what did he mean by this? Is this the whole esotericism thing or something related but different or what?

I assume from the quote that he meant the problem in the analysis of things is a relatively superficial task. When analysing things, we are merely using word play to attempt to define the phenomena of experience. Now of course its extremely useful to analyse "things" although what remains is the problem of the thing in itself; the indescribable phenomena. So the problem of surface things is that perceptually we can never reach the heart of things. Thats just my interpretion of the quote posted

It reminds me of Lacan's concept of "extimus" in contrast to "intimus". On the importance of that which is the most outside of ourselves in relation to who we are.

Sometimes it is not really the issue to find what's underneath things, to read between the lines, to find what is hidden behind the mask of appearances and so on. The mask itself is the real thing and what's underneath is the illusion. Instead of searching "behind things", there is a way to learn from what is at the most immediate surface, something we often neglect.

He’s admitting that his whole hermeneutics of “esotericism” is bullshit—all along it was a ruse to lend legitimacy to his own personal philosophy, which was wholly original but masked as a sort of “secret teaching of all ages”
