I was here last night /lit/, and need another question answered. Which Tolstoy book is the most accessible for someone who is unfamiliar with his work?

You guys were great last night, don't let me down

The short story "The Death of Ivan Illyich" is a great place to begin. After that it's just a pick and choose situation between "War and Peace" and Anna Karenina".

War and Peace was originally titled "War: What is it good for?"

I read Anna Karenina without any knowledge of his other work and I still really enjoyed it. Go with that.

Isn't Crime and Punishment supposed to be pretty easy compared to War and Peace?

That's Dostoevsky.

Which would you consider easier?

I haven't read any Tolstoy...but Crime and Punishment wasn't really hard. The only confusion I suffered from was caused by the characters being called different names, but in my translation the different names were all given on a page before the text.

Neither are too hard. Crime and Punishment is shorter and has less historical premises, so I guess that one. But really, neither is too hard. (Also, in my opinion, C&P is much more thrilling.)
