Footfall and The Mote In God's Eye are two of my favorite books. Can anyone recommend me other sci-fi novels that deal with first encounters and alien physiology as well as these?

Well, that looks like an intelligent book.

Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi is pretty good, although its more humor than hard scifi. meets your criteria, and he offers it for free on his website: http://www.scalzi.com/agent/

also, Calculating God by Robert J Sawyer is fun. An alien arrives at a museum and goes "take me to your paleontologist."

Why are you in here? You have no idea what I'm even talking about. You don't have the qualifications to help here.

Not directly on topic, but I read Ringworld and thought it was amazing. Also read Rainbow Mars which was a bit convoluted but still interesting
