Watch his response here (1:11:29 if the embed fails you), where he talks about becoming an adult and having to make money to survive. He has to stop himself shortly after and gets a bit emotional. It seems like something that really resonates with him.

I haven't read IJ or any of his longer works yet. For those that have, does he discuss this at length anywhere?

He was a good writer and made some money. Does one have to be poor their whole life to be a good artist?

I don't remember anything explicitly about that in IJ, but it's probably there if you look for it.

See what I'm laying down?

Honestly, if you haven't read Infinite Jest, you should just fuck off

I just bought it yesterday and was gonna sit down tomorrow and start on it.

Yeah, I see.

Can anyone elaborate on what he's talking about in Genesis?

“Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.
It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”

The Pale King dives into the monotony of modern work and life.
Even critics of David's other works are fairly appreciative of the way it is done, which is saying a lot.
I would highly reccommend it after IJ, the topic and length are intimidating, but it is actually a breeze to read.
