/sffg/, we are going to make a short fiction anthology.

>does this mean I should post my ideas
No. Talk about them on IRC, the channel is #sffg-antho on the Rizon server.
>but it's a really good idea
Let's not summon the haters.
>where should I submit them
Pastebin them and link them on IRC. They will then be shredded by other anons so you can get defensive and stutter about how it's actually good and they're bad people for not loving it, and then get over it and make your story good.
>what should I submit

35-40k? A couple of novellas could be nice, but longer stories are more likely to be viewed as boring and rejected out of hand.

Oh, feel free to submit a bunch of different stories under a bunch of different pseudonyms, or just anonymously. This will be an all-anon project, nobody gets to boost their brand with it or make any money off it.

I just finished the first Malazon book. I knew what I was getting into, but I think I'm getting tired of high fantasy of this level. Gods, ultra-magic and needing so many books to tell a story. It's just unnecessary. I have an informal book club with a friend though, and I promised we'd at least read two since people say it gets better. I do dislike active Gods, it somehow feels juvenile and lazy.

I'm currently reading Oathbringer. Hopefully it'll cheer me up! I enjoyed the first two a lot. Hope fucking Shallan won't turn into an annoying attention whore.

Neuromancer was pretty bad man. So bad I had forgotten I had read it. Points for creativity though I guess. I just have to accept there is some fetishism in cyberpunk I don't understand and it's not about the story telling, literary value, immersion (contrary to what people claim), or even moral compass of the sub-genre.

I read The Cloud Of Hate (1963) a Fafhrd and Gray Mouser tale from Fritz Leiber. In an underground vault in Lankhmar, an evil cult summons a fog serpent which begins to creep through the evening streets.

The short story contrasts horrific and humorous scenes. We see the progress of the malevolent cloud as it possesses the various criminals and low-lives in its path; meanwhile, Fafhrd and Gray Mouser bicker and grumble about their lack of fortune in front of a brazier. We get a keen sense of the debauched Lankhmar nightlife, and the amiable friendship of its pair of protagonists. The climactic fight sequence is as good as ever from Leiber, with a memorable monster at its centre. This is one of the better F+GM tales and good entertainment. 4/5 dinosaurs.

Well Netflix sure thinks it's good enough for a series, and we all know how high that threshold is.

But for reals, does it at least have good imagery or gimmicks? I really want a cyberpunk TV show, and a few good combat cyborgs with high impulse weapon systems and rain coats will carry me through any shit plot that it most definitely has. Just reading the dustcover was bad. 500 year old samurai warrior solves a murder of an immortal vampire king nonsense.

The prose is decent, and the only place in which I believe the book stands out. All I can say is this book in conjunction with a few others (liberally labeled "cyberpunk") has made me acknowledge the possibility that Sci Fi is not for me. I can't really answer your question on gimmicks because the book barely makes any use of the world around it the protagonist. It really depends on how gimmicky you want it to be and what gimmicks you want to see. It's by the numbers noir generica that could have taken place in almost any other setting. It feels like it was a free write and it was written beat by beat and the author didn't even look back. It requires a level of turning your brain off I'm just not used to. I don't hate Sci Fi btw. I really enjoyed Hyperion and a few others, but this book honestly has me a little afraid to pick up another sci fi book. It's holding me hostage and not in a god way.

Bummer. When I look for cyberpunk, I like a good new take on the possibility of technology. You can make all sorts of awful terrible things to inflict on people, like people being hardwired together as computers, limbs being replaced with concealed weapons, some sort of hyper toxic environment that forces robotification, under ground Android fight clubs, giant birthing tanks full of body parts. You know, cool bits.

When you put that kind of book on screen, a cool visual adaptation if one of those ideas can go really far. But it sounds like a detective kinda story with robots, not a crazy robot world with detectives. When you do a TV show you want to use the greater world as the starting point, instead of just following the books storyline. If that makes sense.

Answering a question from the previous thread-
Clean sci-fi: Your bright and clean unarmed world is overwhelmed by invaders and it's up to your wits to save the day first, yourself second, which you can do at the same time.
Dirty sci-fi: While the writer elaborates about WW1 Trench warfare, and everything you know about becomes nuke-craters, the sky fills with the shattered and burning incoming rescue fleet. But it doesn't matter, while you die of your self inflicted burns on top of a heap of stolen life-supporting goods before the chestburster gets you.

So hey /SFFg/ I have a huge favor to ask.
I'm holiday shopping for relatives and my mom is a huge reader.
Mainly sci-fi/fantasy and romance.

I've been looking online for something to get her but I don't want to get her a book(s) and I got her subscriptions to a few of the science fiction journals last year.
I was wondering if you guys knew where I could get some decent stuff based off of books, Like stranger in a strange land, Rendezvous with Rama, Contact, Hyperion etc....

I've been looking all around but unless I want to get my mom a star trek or star wars mug I might be shit out of luck.

I know there's the open source stores like Redbubble and Cafepress but I kinda want to get something more official.

Thanks for your help in advance.

I think aspiring writers are better off taking a history course, rather than literature. A writer gets a sense of human perspective and scope by a study of history, of different politics and cultures, and plenty of things to draw inspiration from. It lends itself very well to speculative writing - Roman and Byzantine history alone have fed into Foundation, Lest Darkness Fall, BOTNS. Gene Wolfe is on record saying that the Byzantines were the basis of Nessus, and he is a Grecophile anyway - ditto Robert Silverberg.

That's a good point and the (arbitrary) contention was most-famous-scifi-writer, not most-famous-scifi-novel.

Now if the latter was the argument, I'd have to go with "1984" nowadays as everyone loves to reference it, with "Brave New World" being the runner-up. Two generations ago, "Dune" wins hands-down. Dunno what wins a generation ago.

It's interesting to think about. Somebody like Andy Weir is obviously selling tens of millions of books, but only since the last few years. Michael Crichton will still probably be more widely read than Andy Weir. And with Asimov, Clarke and co, they retain an iconic stature that Weir and other flashes in the pan don't have - even if little Johnny is far more likely to get The Martian in his christmas stocking, culture is far more permeated in the speculative fiction of Asimov (three laws of robotics etc.) And people will recognise something as PKD-esque without reading him when it comes to androids.

I can only guess. Perhaps the desert imagery of other popular works in the decade ("Lawrence of Arabia") resounded with that generation, much like tiki/rattan/"South Pacific" did in the Fifties. The duration of the popularity seems to coincide with a generation; I myself remember watching the terrible TV movie as a kid.

Now, I mostly read good books but the worst book with Neil Gaiman's name on it, as author or as an endorsement, I've read is probably one of GRRM's anthologies and that's hardly Gaiman's fault.

It most certainly does. Author endorsements/plugs/recommendations are the main way I find new fantasy authors after personal recommendations from trusted people I know. The book is forward thinking. It says, "if we continue down the path we're on, what's going to be different in 4 centuries?" One of those things is the annihilation of gender - sort of (spoilers). People present the way they want and there's no male or female attached to any clothing or actions. The narrator uses pronouns in ways that trick you and play on your preconceptions, and it was pretty neat to me.

Other than that, several styles of government are showcased - corporate dictatorship, absolute monarchy, elective monarchy, anarchy, and parliamentary democracy, among others, and all are treated fairly.

Just a reminder that English translation of Koji Suzuki's "S"/"Es" is coming out in 5 days.

Also, fuck it, here are my oh-so-important opinions on what I've read.

Ringu - pretty good conventional genre work (horror, based upon urban legend). Drags a bit towards the end, but sports a really good subversive ending. Didn't really need a sequel.

Rasen/Spiral - a sequel to the book that didn't really need a sequel. Pretty much a Borges-ization of Ringu, subverting every single thing that wasn't set in stone in the first book's text, and that reader took for granted. With the whole point being reader trying to guess what the whole point of the book even is. Not really a genre work, more of a desperate attempt to escape confines of the genre of the first book. Well, as the subsequent books of the author show, he has only escaped one genre in order to land right into another one. Rasen, though, is still pretty much unclassifiable, and I personally consider it Suzuki's best work. It really is an amazing book almost entirely throughout. The very ending though just isn't good. More like disappointingly stupid and clearly unintentionally ridiculous.

Loop - tries to be a horror (ends up a very boring one), but actually is a pretty conventional sci-fi book, built around a single twist. The twist is okay, the book, eh.

Promenade of the Gods - only read a half. ore down-to-Earth focus seemed interesting, but eh, by this time I've started to get tired of Suzuki.

Edge/Ejji. Pretty much a very developed Loop in the sense similar to how Rasen was a very developed Ringu. No direct ties though. Suzuki's attempt at Magnum Opus. Very formulaic, the whole book is built around its last chapter, where everything is more or less tied together. Well, the concept really is massive and amazing, but the pace of the entire book before the last chapter is pretty much a really boring crawl. Is also very speculative (sci-pop) in quite an annoying way. I mean, it's obvious that author thinks that he is saying something very profound about how reality is built or something, and muh research, and muh science, and muh bibliography at the end of the book, but, really, that's just... surface-level buzzwords, I guess. Anyway, even though the last chapter is really good, well, it's not really evident, what the central theme of the book is. Like, it looks, like a really big bunch of almost unrelated things is more or less superficially tied together. Like, the whole concept doesn't really look like a concept, and more like several concepts that are just cobbled together, and where it's not really possible to determine, just which one was supposed to be the more important one for author. Like, the whole thing just... rants. It doesn't have the sense of monolithic unity (at least, that of reader's experience) Rasen had. It feels constructed. That's my point.

Anyway, "S"/"Es" is a direct sequel to Rasen (which I consider to be factual, not intended, Suzuki's MO), which, from what I've heard, ignores meta-stuff from Loop. Also, there is this movie, Sadako3D, which has an almost universally abysmal reputation (I really liked it though, as a companion-piece to Rasen, in terms of how amazingly well it has managed to catch the atmosphere of Suzuki's books; it also has a very clear and concise point, which actually made a lot of sense to me; I didn't really like the sequel though). The relation of this movie to the book is unclear. At the very least, the book is told from the perspective of the boyfriend of the woman, from whose perspective the movie is told. As to how the book's and movie's scripts fit together, whether they fit together at all, I have no actual idea.
The only thing I expect from this book as of Rasen's sequel, is for it to be incredibly subversive, the more the better. Whether there will be any point to it, well, that'll remain to be seen.

He lessened the slog at the cost of fucking up the time lines and feeling. Major spoiler warning: Rands epiphany and full return to the light on top of Dragonmount happened way to early compared to the finals of some other plotlines that were supposed to contribute to the feeling of darkness and despair. But since Rand had already turned super messiah the struggles of others lost their weight, we basically knew that the next big turning point would be Rand at Shayol Ghul.

Almost finished. Was a little surprised by the 30 year timeskip before the start of this book. It might be going a little stale after so many books, but I'm still reading it, as I'm still interested in wherever humanity ends up. And I like the TV series.

There's a good blog post somewhere about how Sanderson basically had a hard time grasping Jordans "complex" timeline during the quite tight release schedule he, Harriet and Tor had agreed on. Basically, the last books are very little Jordan.

from what i gather from normies is that they by and large still not even know 4chan besides the memes that sprang for it and at best know reddit or specific ecelebs.

Sanderson was working from Jordan's notes you fucker. What ever happened was what Jordan wrote down, and what his wife okayed. His wife was his editor from day one, she would know more than you what Jordan was doing.

When Blood song and unhewn throne series ended as shit did you blame someone else or the author? Sanderdon was not the author. Jordan was. Sanderson just worked as an editor. What ever happened Jordan's wife made happen.

I'm not sure but from what I've read it came from RJ. It's only that it came to early, because of Sandersons increase in pace. As Jordan would have written the last books everything slowly going to hell would have continued for a longer while up until the turning point, Rands epiphany, where most characters would have resolved their problems and headed out to fight in the Last Battle.

>>10403633
I'm blaming Harriet, Brandon and Tor for setting a schedule they could not possibly keep. And I'm not blaming them for any major plot points, I'm sure they were faithful to RJs notes, but for the pacing and structuring of mainly the last books.

I also hate Sandersons prose but that's like just my opinion man so I don't complain about that.

Hello.

Your vehement admiration is by no doubt unique. I thoroughly enjoy you going through the effort of reaching out to me, albeit I am completely clueless as what you ever hoped to achieve with that.
Did you imagine me thanking you for your support? Did you imagine me giving you some half-assed words of encouragement?
I am in the process of writing the next book in the series, did you think you would encourage me in some way? The only thing you have accomplished is wasting my time by responding to you when I could be writing the book. Are you happy with that? Does your ego feel fulfilled now that an author has finally replied to you, no doubt you've reached out to many authors, we know your kind. You have delayed my book, but I have no doubt you feel very good with yourself indeed, because you have received a response.

With the upmost love and respect -
