I've heard that "I am a strange loop" is a better, cleaner approach to what Hofstadter was getting at in GEB. Is this true? Which of his books are the best on the subject?

It's cleaner but much less fun. Stick with GBE

ive read most of it, ditched his attempts at explaining incompletness in favor of Nagel&Newman's "Gödels Proof" as recommended in the introduction.
Wanted a cleaner reference without the entry-level introductions to formal languages etc. The Bach and Escher stuff is certainly fascinating, I just didn't like how it diverted into large pseudo-technical sections, felt like a distraction to someone familiar with some of the maths/computer science already.
