>Wild eyes were another sign. It is something I have seldom seen — the expression of an ecstatic state — though much is foolishly written of them, as if they grew like Jerusalem artichokes along the road. The eyes are black, right enough, whatever their normal color is; they are black because their perception is condensed to a coal, because the touch and taste and perfume of the lover, the outcry of a dirty word, a welcome river, have been reduced in the heat of passion to a black ash, and this unburnt residue of oxidation, this calyx, replaces the pupil so it no longer receives but sends, and every hair is on end, though perhaps only outspread on a pillow, and the nostrils are flared, mouth agape, cheeks sucked so the whole face seems as squeezed as a juiced fruit; I know, for once Lou went into that wildness while we were absorbing one another, trying to kiss, not merely forcefully, not the skull of our skeleton, but the skull and all the bones on which the essential self is hung, kiss so the shape of the soul is stirred too, that's what is called the ultimate French, the furtherest fuck, when a cock makes a concept cry out and climax; I know, for more than once, though not often, I shuddered into that other region, when a mouth drew me through its generosity into the realm of unravel, and every sensation lay extended as a lake, every tie was loosed, and the glue of things dissolved. I knew I wore the wild look then. The greatest gift you can give another human being is to let them warm you till, in passing beyond pleasure, your defenses fall, your ego surrenders, its structure melts, its towers topple, lies, fancies, vanities, blow away in no wind, and you return, not to the clay you came from — the unfired vessel — but to the original moment of inspiration, when you were the unabbreviated breath of God.

I've been reading some of the few obituaries, and it seems like none of them actually read Gass' fiction. They only quote his essays, which is sad considering he himself preferred his fiction. I'm sure that if any of them had actually read The Tunnel, they would be all over his dick because of the section on bigotry and its relevance to the current political moment (though of course they would miss the deeper point about the "fascism of the heart"). Ah well, serves me right for expecting anything worthwhile from the press.

This is really sad for me because Gass was one of the first authors I discovered in college. It also hits quite literally close to home because I later found out that Gass taught at Wash U at the same time my grandfather (1969 - death in 1993) was a professor of Humanities there. Gass lived in the (much more affluent) Parkview neighborhood, which begins quite literally 0.01 miles from where my dad and his side of the family grew up (and my aunt still lives to this day now that my grandmother is gone too). And I grew up just another 1000 feet down from that house. My uncle used to have a home over in Parkview. She could have literally been neighbors with Gass. Gass' wife Mary even made a book about the architecture of homes in the neighborhood (most are at least 80 - 110 years old).

I never got to meet my grandfather and ask him about stories of if he met Gass. I never got the chance to reach out to Gass himself. He was such an impactful writer, but it's special to realize how impactful he and his family were to the community around them.

Honestly, Saint Louis still is nice, but it's being getting fucked up by neo-liberal dipshit policies since the 50s. My grandparent's house was in an area where realtors blockbust the neighborhood by getting black people to move in but it never really caught on and our neighborhood (yes even with black people, shocking!) remained a damn strong community. But like just north of us because a meth/crack shithole. There was literally a crackhouse there. And like this is all in close proximity to the Loop and Wash U. It's insane. It's been getting worse recently too, there was a shooting a street down from us the other year. Protesters trashed the Loop this year after the cop's verdict came out.

But yeah, Saint Louis the most corrupt midwest city next to Chicago. We're not at peak Chicago crime levels yet (the worst was literally during the 80s and early 90s with the crack epidemic, gangs, and the straw-camel-back in regard to public housing projects just being in complete decay and chaos). Speaking of public housing, look at what happened to Pruitt-Igoe. Shocking.

Public housing projects have always been fascinating to me because of how the communities develop within and evolve over time, but also in terms of how the cities manage and usually let them decay. They've had enormous impact on modern day culture (especially music, though moreso in the UK) and the political climate.

t. someone who doesn't know that I was the actual poster questioning purple prose, literary advice, and publications to merely showcase the fact that I -- the mastermind in question --just so happen to be Stem Chad, as well as the recipient of a national award for one of my published stories. This affords me many luxuries, such as: entrancing tinder sluts with my arcane knowledge of Riemann mathematics, and just how it relates to the augmented intertexuality that manifests within reality in recent postmodern pieces, showcasing the ever-elusive chase of human beings reaching for art that properly captures the brutality of chance, petty frustrations, and the absurdity of aging; having my work read by tens of people; dropping truth bombs like it's nothing on here.

Gotta go now. Gonna tap the 17th slut this weekend.
