Funny story, my wife had “So it goes” tattooed above her hip several years ago. She has another, fairly large tattoo on the other side of her hip.

After having our two children, of the two tattoos, the “So it goes” tattoo took the brunt of the damage from the experience. It’s still legible but does have some distortion.

I don’t think she’s happy it happened for obvious reasons, but it feels right, almost like it’s settled into its meaning.

I still remember the first piece of Vonnegut I read: The Euphio Question. We read it in my high school creative writing class. The story centers around the ethics of using and monetizing a cosmic sound that induces extreme pleasure but at the cost of making you unaware of your surroundings (sometimes dangerously so). I spent the rest of the day thinking about that story. Thinking about how many different ways it could be interpreted.

When I first read cat's cradle I would get through a chapter and just sit there and think "what the fuck did I just read?" But it grabs you at this deep inner part of your gut that tells you that what you're reading is important. And so I continued. I really do think that's the best way to read him.

Yeah, Vonnegut is one of those writers who can condense an insane amount of depth and meaning into a sentence or two. Like the first line of my favorite book Cat's Cradle, "Call me Jonah." In three words he alludes to both Moby Dick and Jonah of the Bible, relevant analogies for the story he is about to tell. The good news is that his books are short so they aren't too hard to study.

I had to stop reading Vonnegut, 1. because I ran out of books and 2. because I didn't deserve to read him. I struggle with him every time I try to read anything he has written. I read a couple paragraphs, or maybe a chapter or two, and then I have to put the book down for a while and think about things. There's something about the way he uses words and time that make it almost impossible for me to take it all in. It's frustrating and I don't think I would have it any other way.
