Nominate a book that is really good but rarely mentioned here. A book you wouldn't be ashamed of suggesting to others.

There's frequent mention of Buddenbrooks, The Magic Mountain, and even occasionally Doctor Faustus but Joseph and His Brothers is without a doubt Thomas Mann's greatest work. It's a retelling of Genesis chapters 27–50 (the stories of Jacob and Joseph), only it comes out to a whopping 1500 pages. It is without a doubt the single greatest work of historical fiction ever conceived. Its set in the latter half of the eighteenth egyptian dynasty (approx 1350-1290 BC) in a historical period almost completely unknown to most people (the Ancient Near East). Despite its ancient setting, Mann omits no detail in terms of geography or history and uses exact place names, prevailing attitudes and beliefs from the era, and intimately discusses day to day life almost a thousand years before Aristotle was even born. Absolute essential reading for Christians, fans of historical fiction, and anyone who claims to like Thomas Mann

are you saying sometimes a great notion was a brilliant book....?

Or is that just irony?

It's no doubt the best example of Mann's maximalism and craft, but I think his other works are rightly mentioned more frequently
