Where do I start with this guy? Do I need any background for reading him?

Like any good writer he references the Greeks a lot. An understanding of history is all you need for him

Maybe read Carlyle's On Heroes either before or after his Representative Men. Also Montaigne is a good contrast, either before or after the essays, etc. Goddard's small book on Transcendentalism is a great short introduction to his time period FWIW, but the anon who counsels 'know your history' gives the needed advice.
