Why are the users of this board so triggered by brushes with true intelligence? One might think that men who routinely exhaust their faculties wrestling with the canonical texts of Western Literature would be willing to defer in all humility to a superior mind, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

What gives, /lit/?

/lit/ is predominately the result of a United States and consequently a world that has been suffering from a sort of cancer which can be made analogous to the counterfeit currency phenomenon modeled by Gresham's law in which the bad drives out the good. The real major problems with capitalism right now are twofold: that cronyism has caused it to sidestep any need for traditional totalitarianism as a transitional phase in order to reach a post-totalitarian state, firstly, and secondly, that capitalism is supposed to be a value-neutral engine, but in the United States and elsewhere it is run (by defacto plutocracy) by three competing groups. The first group is a group that professes to have traditional values but really just uses the language of traditional values as a shibboleth to promote opportunity hoarding. Since they have no special affinity for the market they see no contradiction in using state power to consolidate their own power in reference to a professed system of ideals which is increasingly hollow and disingenuous. The second is a group who have reified the market itself into something other than what it is, which is to say into a source of values in and of itself, which has effectively rendered this group into practitioners of cargo cult capitalism. The third are mostly made up of the tech barons and others who have somehow managed to do an end-run around all of this, who have no well defined values because they're purely technical minded people and know it. This group can be further subdivided into those who are in search of a value system, and those who have chosen a kind of permanent neoteny over self-improvement and tried to make this their value system.

Pt 2

In the midst of all of this, the intellectual landscape has grown worse and worse, favoring those who can speak the respective shibboleths of each group over those who can actually think. It's worth noting that some shibboleths are actually facticity like race, gender etc, since these generally speak louder than any actual words: ie, no one in power actually cares what a minorities ideology is. The exception is the paid shill, who doesn't actually have an ideology or a brain and is thus non-threatening and pleasant to have around, less because they repeat the ideological buzzwords of the group they're attached to and more because the fact they do so is a proof of power.

4chan is made up of people who have grown up in this landscape, who have basically as a result been reduced to passive antennas picking up whatever ambient memes are salient in the muck of empty shibboleths, generally in accordance with nothing other than their most basic impulses. You can see how they flitter about from one intellectual from the next as soon as they realize each one actually thinks, is honest, and won't simply justify all their crudest residual impulses even when they contradict one another. It's fucked, I hate it.

maybe with middling intelligence, though i dont see how that gives rise to your proposed solution

Our society uses intelligence as the justification of its organizational structure and its conception of justice and has since the enlightenment. Anyone who finds fault in our society and wishes to change it should despise intelligence in all of its officially recognized forms.

it cherishes 'rationality' as defined by the mob, not actual intelligence. yes, in a democratic society official sanction tends to be a sign that something is whack.

that aside, there aren't enough people of aptitude to staff our bureaucracy, notwithstanding the fact that almost none have received a proper education.
