I just did a search for nigger in my 55,000 word novella and it returned 11,986 results.
Is this too much? I want to write realistically but does there come a point where it detracts from the artistry?
It's a modern day story dealing with many present-day social issues and my main character is what most would consider a "racist" and so he is very flippant with the word's use but I'm worried that publishers will not accept my novella or see its artistic merit because of this and instead condemn it for being insensitive or intentionally inflammatory. The James stuff is a major mis-interpretation, he gives priority to a negative theology in the Varieties, but certainly says we shouldn't take it as truth. Nothing you've said is relevant to the claims being made, and I'm not the one here with a shit historical understanding. He is attributing the idea of mechanical philosophy in his personal bizarre genealogy to Mill and Comte. He states, "what if humans aren't made of special sauce, but are actually lots of little mechanisms, and we can understand them as easily as any other physical mechanism?" Which actually has it roots in the early modern period: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_philosophy and arguably earlier via Aristotle, the Atomists, and others. There were several early moderns who made the same claim (humans are mechanical, and there is no soul-like explanations, teleological explanations, or vitalistic explanations. While there were others that took substance dualist approaches and vitalist approaches). There is a good argument to be made that Descartes thought similarly and was writing esoterically (explicitly flip-flopping in his letters between describing humans as machines, then backtracking to dualism when questioned about this). Hilarious that a so-called "continental" can't into genealogy and the history of ideas. If you had actually done some philosophy broadly over historical, analytic, continental, pragmatist, and naturalist schools -- and weren't a status-striving film theory bugman pseud -- you'd recognize he was incorrect.

Your post then takes Mill and Comte as the origins of analytic philosophy through mechanical philosophy, as if this somehow is solely tied to analytic philosophy in its origins when it is:
a) a banal observation since mechanism is associated with early modern natural philosophy in general, and has been a factor in the sciences and natural philosophy since the beginning,
b) isn't a truthmaker for the difference between continental philosophy since D&G refer to material mechanism throughout their co-authorship drawing on Spinoza's affective mechanism.
c) isn't really true of analytic philosophy in general because there were early analytics like C.D. Broad who influenced further analytics with competing visions to mechanism e.g. emergence and dynamical systems, a non-reductive program echoed in Deleuze, Delanda, and others.
d) isn't true of your definition involving law-like regularities and Hempel's covering laws because firstly, Hempel's CL explanations weren't given till mid 20th c, and secondly most post-Hempel mechanists don't buy into such a causal explanation (see Woodward). Your description of it as involving covering-laws is historically inaccurate presentist bullshit. You're really making a presentist mistake here, several times over which is typical of historicist-types, by applying philosophical ideas in places that didn't exist. Instead of doing an accurate genealogy of what is happening, you are jumping all over the place and applying theoretical terminology to situations in which it didn't exist in the time periods you are talking about.
