Hi, so I know that you're probably an illiterate baboon that eats his own shit but I am going to assume that (since you found your way here somehow) you can at least read basic English.

So I want you to take out the original unrevised Garnett C&P and compare it to (really any modern translation will work) the P&V Translation of C&P.
Do you see how one of them is a lot less heavy than the other? Yeah, That is because the Garnett is 430 pages long while the P&V version is 551 pages. Old Constance, because of her Victorian sensibilities and lack of fluency in Russian, removed over 100 pages of the fucking book. I don't even want to mention her horrid editing of Dostoyevsky's prose style.

tl:dr Translation matters a lot and you should stop talking about things you know jack shit about, faggot.

P&V is the standard translation for people actually working with the texts but (as I said) you will find a similar result with any modern translation.

After reading the book, I had to think a little bit about what Raskolnikov's true crime was. I was unhappy thinking that the crime was just the fact that he murdered a woman. I do not think the crime was the murder of the woman, but was in fact the idea that the murder did not lead to any greater good. Raskolnikov's murder was only a crime because it did not lead to any prolific accomplishment. He was not in fact a Napoleon, thus he could not justify his murder making him a lesser man and murder a crime, much in line with his contention in his academic journal.

But seeing as this book is anti-nihilism and pro-religion I feel that that viewpoint gives way to the opposite point of the book.

Any insight would be appreciated, it has been about a year since I've read it.

How stupid can you be? Page length has to do with all kinds of things such as the size of the paper, size of the font, line spacing, whether the translation is terser or wordier, etc. Garnett's translation has also been in print for a century and exists in all manner of different page lengths because of various formatting. It means literally nothing unless you can demonstrate that content was cut.

And on top of that, even demonstrating that content is missing doesn't necessarily mean anything, as the book in the original language may have existed in different editions which included, omitted, or changed certain things. It's a more complicated issue than it seems at first.
