Someone was doing the Haruhi light novels, but they are kind of crap. I bought the first two, somehow managed to finish the first one and get half way through the second, just can't stomach anymore.

Yes, it happens. I've seen a fair few fan translations of Japanese novels online. If there's a specific one you're looking for, you might be able to find it.

No, there's not a giant, reliable, productive, devoted base of people working on translating all Japlit like there is with anime and manga.
