So wait this isn't philosophy?

What is it, just a regular novel?

maybe if you'd explain your opinion and didn't just call it shit, we could actually have a discussion about it..

Yes, I guess you'll like it. I'd say it's more psychological than philosophical, though there's some proto-existentialism themes.

Go and read Notes From Underground. I think it's the first existentialist book.

sure, if you want to read a long, drawn out religious parable.

Religion is scary! I'm not gonna read that!

Thanks for saving me the time man I almost grew some balls and realized that plenty of writers are religious and most books have a moral message. My friends will still like me for my unabashed rejection of mainstream thought.

You have to properly demoralize the 15 year olds with the same zeal that they ruin every thread so that the ones that aren't simply trolling will leave and come back when they're ready.

Exactly. Dostoyevsky was an existentianalist. While Sartre did write some purely theoretical works, for the most part existentialists ended up basing their arguments on the naturalistic fallacy, the grounds for which they MADE UP.

>> No.1027513

>>1027487
No! You mean a philosopher has made something up? Or an author had the audacity to think that philosophers were nothing more than good essayists and poor fiction writers? You've shaken my foundation! No philosophy is truth!

>> No.1027525

Why is it shit? Because for its nice ideas Dostoevsky shoehorns a load of crap into this novel, like he does with most of his works.

The likes of Tolstoy and Turgenev were quite adept at inserting commentaries or views on the condition of Russia at the time without having to have characters blather on for pages about contemporary events totally unrelated to what the characters were supposed to be doing.

THAT, is why Dostoevsky, despite all his clever ideas, is a poor *novelist* and why he should have just written treatises instead.

>> No.1027532

OP here

My English teacher said it's a great book and I've heard its good so I'm just gonna read it anyway

I'll look into Notes From Underground if I like this
