The series has its fair share of detractors for sure. Even the fans will agree that parts of the series are an absolute slog to get through (Crossroads of Twilight for example) and some anons on /sffg/ really don't like the Sanderson books but I wouldn't say they are hated here.

Parts 2 through 4 were kind of a slog for me. Shallan and Kaladin retread a lot of ground on their character development, and the traveling group through Kholinar and Shadesmar just went so fucking slowly. I did enjoy the opening and the closing of Oathbringer, but it's probably my least favourite of the three Stormlight books so far.

Dalinar and the Bridge Four chapters were great though.

I want something particularly "Gothic". Novel-length is preferable, but anything goes. I'm not really looking for grimdark (something edgy for the sake of being edgy). Though keep in mind that you don't "bond" with it. Adonalsium is not a spren, nor are its splinters. They are more like mindless forces of nature driven to a certain purpose, that people fuse with. Adonalsium is the fusion of all of them.

Ruin's purpose is to decay things, Cultivation's is to grow things, Odium to discard and Honor to uphold, Autonomy to separate and Dominion to unite, Preservation to keep and Endowment to give, etc.

Recommend Sanderson, Brent Weeks. They kind of explain how their magic work.
If you too brainlet to read the book and infer the stuff on your own, use their wikis. They are popular enough to have their shit autisticly detailed on some wiki somewhere.

Prosperity, safety and all that jazz, but this is a fantasy novel. Unless plants grow unbelievably fast in the Wheel universe, the king would have had to be standing there for a long time for them to reach that stage.
Thus my notion of magic growth stands on solid ground.

Maybe the sword encourages growth? The grass is dead-ish elsewhere, but where the sword touches the ground they are sprouting like weeds on fertilizer.

Dropping a few references to the phenomenon around the narrative should make it familiar enough that it's not uncomfortable without making it feel like you're slopping foreshadowing on there. It's really a delicate balance and you need to practice a lot to get it right. But as usual it depends on the needs of your unique story and you probably won't get the doctoring it needs through summary paragraphs on an anime nazi website.

The princeling isn't of immediate use to the antagonists anymore, and Aesudan's narrative purpose was already over. We know she was offed off-screen because of Odium's exchange with Amaram, so we only need to assume that two of the most likely candidates to become Windrunners finished their oaths under duress and pulled off an escape against enemies that stopped caring about them.

Can someone Greentext the fight when Kaladin jumped into the arena to save Dalinar's son?

>> No.10278631

Ok, a few days off of reading Oathbringer, I feel like I can look back at it somewhat critically. Spoilers for all currently printed cosmere stuff

On Shallan
So I think my biggest gripe with this book was Shallan, which was sad because she was my favorite character in WoR and WoK. I just have no real connection to her problems besides the fact that she's got split personalities as a coping mechanism for killing mommy and daddy. Dalinar and Kaladin at least both have pretty straightforward depression, which I can get having had it myself.

On Kaladin
I really like Kaladin's arc in this book. I remmeber before it came out people were afraid he'd be Odium's champ, or die, or something because his arc was apparently over. However, the whole scene at Kholinar with Elhokar's death really showed me that he had a lot to do still. Definitely boosted up in my character rankings from last where he was for both previous books. I especially liked the scene where he just couldn't do the 4th oath. He's not perfect, he's still working, and he still has room to grow. Bet he dies book 5 though.

On Dalinar
Dalinar's arc was phenomenally done. All the flashback scenes just showed so well why he was regarded as such a badass by everyone in WoK & WoR. I also liked the scenes with him, Sadeas, and Galivar just broing it up. Him becoming Odium's champion and then ascending was badass as hell. Definitely my favorite of the 3 main characters atm.

On Szeth
Szeth is my main man and my favorite character in this book. I cannot wait for his flashback book and everything he does in the future. His interactions with the Skybreakers were great, and I loved his interactons with Nightblood, especially having read Warbreaker on Monday. Him drawing Nightblood was awesome and I totally want more Nightblood killing EVILLLL.

On Hoid
Kinda split on Hoid here. On one hand I like how he tried to get Shallan back into the swing of things, and him getting a cryptic bond is pretty funny/interesting for the future. On the other, I prefer him when he's more mysterious and in the back. Not sure he can handle a solo novel anytime soon, so still holding out judgement on him.

On Everyone else
The Bridge 4 guys were all great. I don't think I disliked a single one of them. Especially Teft and Rock, those two had great arcs. Seeing Azure (who I'm 99% sure is Vivenna) was pretty rad too. Also fuck Moash. Fuck him hard.
