Anyone ever read Being and Time? Any thoughts or advice for getting through it?

I'm taking a course next semester and Being and Time is the main book I'm gonna have to get through

It is a very challenging volume, but can be quite enjoyable if you can grasp the core concepts. My advice would be to read small chunks throughout your day. For example: read 20 pages at breakfast, after dinner etc. That's what helped me get through it. Plus you can contemplate about it throughout your day. Best of luck.

read the intro a few times and listen to dreyfus' lectures on YT even though he's an idiot

>> No.10266749

it would be extremely helpful if you looked up some of your Prof's work on the subject and understood who he was reading Heidegger through
Derridean Heideggerians, Dreyfusian Heideggerians, Haugelanders, Lacanians, they vary wildly on what even the basic ideas in Heidegger's corpus stand for and what his overall project was

thanks. the course itself won't be too hard but i just want to know how i can get the most out of it. any background reading you think is necessary to grasp the concepts? i'm more well versed in analytic stuff and i really haven't read any continental philosophy thus far.

i know the greeks and descartes/kant fairly well so i have an okay foundation there but i'm wondering what the real difference is

will do. why is he an idiot?

i don't think my professor has done any work on heidegger specifically. this isn't really his specialty, the circumstances in which i'm taking this class are kind of weird. but he wouldn't normally be teaching it.

do interpretations of heidegger really vary that wildly? that surprises me

sorry, he's an adjuct professor so i don't know much about him but i just looked him up and he's written some papers on Hegel so it might be okay

still not sure how he'd interpret heidegger though

Like some others have suggested, it would be useful to look up some videos on Youtube to get a decent footing. When it comes to background reading, you could get a copy of his basic writings that's been published recently. It's more of a gentler introduction to his thought. Other than that I would just dive in. Cheers

Read his Introduction to metaphysics first
