My best m8 is getting conscripted (mandatory military training on the Army- 9 months)

He is leaving behind a stable job, his dream gf and his thesis.
He is handling it pretty well but situation in there can get really shit when you have to deal with illiterate bumpkins that didn't even finish highschool as comrades and bull headed petty officers that are 5 years younger than you making you miserable.

So, I was thinking getting him something to help him pull through without snapping on someone and extending his conscription through some disciplinary penalty.

I was thinking something Stoic is most fitting, but might be too depressing?

He will like poetry too, but I never really dipped into it.

So, apart from the obvious choice of Meditations, what do you gentlemen suggest?

What backwards ass shithole do you live in that the government has mandatory conscription during peacetime? If I was him, I'd tell them to fuck off, they can't force you to waste your time with that shit

The military is significantly more /lit/ than the general population. That's only speaking from the American military and the Korean's I was with though.

He'll be fine. But he will have tons of downtime, so he could probably breeze through a good 80 books in the span without even blinking.

Finland. I myself came to loathe the proletariat and slave classes during that time.

I found the stoics comforting during my service. The Myth of Sisyphus and other absurd stuff resonated well with me, as the military is an extremely absurd place. Finally I would recommend some comfy books, I reread a lot of Hesse that I had first read as a teenager.
